As part of the first-ever cohort of 小黄鸭视频鈥檚 Master of Science in Data Intelligence program, Srinivas Baireddy says he took a leap of faith when choosing a brand-new program over a more traditional computer science degrees. Now, as he prepares to graduate in May, he reflects on how the program equipped him with the technical expertise and industry-level skills needed for a career in AI and data analytics.
Shifting from engineering to data intelligence
Baireddy began his career with a bachelor鈥檚 degree in mechanical engineering. After a few years of working as an automation test engineer, he realized he wanted more of a challenge.
鈥淚 wanted a more fulfilling career beyond routine tasks,鈥 he said.
To open the door to new opportunities, he applied to several universities for graduate programs in computer science, including 小黄鸭视频鈥檚 Master of Science in Computer Science.
However, due to his mechanical engineering background and limited software experience, he was not admitted to the program. Instead, faculty redirected him to the Master of Science in Data Intelligence, a program that would bridge the gap between his background and future aspirations.
Choosing 小黄鸭视频鈥檚 MSDI program
Several factors influenced Baireddy鈥檚 decision to enroll in the master鈥檚 in data intelligence program. First and foremost was : the program鈥檚 flat tuition rate of $650 per credit hour was significantly lower than comparable programs at other universities, with many charging over $1,000 per credit hour. This made the degree an attractive option with a strong return on investment.
He also appreciated that the program鈥檚 curriculum was built to balance technical skills with business acumen.
Finally, despite the program being new, Baireddy trusted that a graduate degree from 小黄鸭视频 would carry weight in the job market. 小黄鸭视频 is a nationally respected research university with exceptional engineering faculty.
He also enjoyed the flexibility of the program 鈥 with options to enroll in both in-person and online classes. He credits this customizable format, along with his ability to land a graduate teaching assistanceship, with helping him expand his professional network, keep working, andmaintain an academic workload that best fit his schedule.
Gaining real-world skills
Now in his final semester, Baireddy has completed nearly all the 30 required credit hours in the data intelligence program. Throughout his studies, he has explored a variety of topics, including data analytics, statistical engineering, data mining, machine learning, and artificial intelligence.
A key aspect of the program, he noted, has been the opportunity to apply his knowledge and skills through hands-on projects. One project included using data analytics for defect detection in the manufacturing industry, reinforcing real-world use cases for the expertise he gained. Along with gaining proficiency in Python, AI, and machine learning, he also took electives in management and supply chain to deepen his industry knowledge.
鈥淭his program is a great option for students from various backgrounds because it focuses on real-world industry applications, not just theory,鈥 Baireddy said.
Faculty support and program growth
One of the most influential figures in his classes has been Professor Tapas Das, who provided one-on-one mentorship.
Recognizing Baireddy鈥檚 hard work and dedication to his studies, Das鈥 guidance has been an invaluable source of support as he shapes his academic and career path.
鈥淧rofessor Das encouraged me to consider a PhD, and it鈥檚 something I may pursue after gaining some industry experience,鈥 he said.
Career readiness
With its affordable cost, well-rounded curriculum, and strong faculty support, Baireddy believes the MSDI program has positioned him for a bright future in data intelligence.
鈥淚 feel confident that the combination of technical skills, such as AI, programming, and data analytics, and non-technical skills, such as public speaking and management, will set me apart in the job market,鈥 he said.
As part of the first graduating MSDI cohort, Baireddy represents one of many students who will benefit from the program鈥檚 industry-focused approach and commitment to student success.
